Infinity’s Paw Surgery

It’s difficult to fathom any of our family members injured or hurt, but it is inevitable. A few weeks ago, we were running in the park, when Infinity started limping and bleeding out of nowhere. We stopped and upon further inspection, her back right paw was the culprit! So we made our way back home. We applied basic first aid. We made the decision to go to the vet because it was swollen and would not stop bleeding. After our vet shaved and cleaned up the paw, we were given anti-inflammatories along with some pain medication to keep Infinity comfortable.

We were informed by the vet that the wound was fibrous, looked like some sort of viral infection, probably of the papilloma variety. In very rare cases, it could turn into cancer.

CANCER!? The big C? That’s scary in any context, unless you’re being told that you don’t have cancer. So to think Finny could be at risk for it, terrifying.

The course of treatment was to take the medication to bring the swelling down, have surgery to remove the root of the wart-like mass, and send it off for a histology, basically to test the tissue sample for cancer and/or other diseases.

Here is a progression of the paw from the first day to post-op, and finally after the stitches were removed.

From the day we discovered the mass on her paw to the stitches being removed, the entire recovery period took one month. About a week after surgery, we received word from the histology report and the vet that the tissue sample from the mass was not cancerous and has very little chance of recurring. What a relief. Phew!

All of the veterinary care did cost us quite a bit, but it was worth every penny. We would do anything to keep our furry family happy and healthy.
